Dog Behavior Modification

Dog behavior modification is often confused with obedience training. The difference being that behavior modification mostly deals with "why" dogs do the things they do. Obedience training just "teaches" the dog a command. Both things are important. However, today...we are talking about dog behavior modification, mostly separation anxiety. Separation anxiety is very upsetting to your dog. Dogs are very social creatures and don't like to be left alone. Therefore, when they are left alone, they tend to get either "bored" or they get destructive. Either way...it is not good for you, your home, or the dog.

Here are a few tips:
  • Exercise your dog - exercise is a great stress reliever for us...it is an excellent stress reliever for your dog too!
  • Learn the sign of distress - when your dog follows you around when you are getting ready for work, is whining, getting all the toys, heavy panting, shaking...these are signs.
  • Crate your dog - crate training when they are a puppy is a wonderful solution to separation anxiety. The crate provides a safety place where the dog can go to relax and calm down.
